Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread Ingredients

  • Bananas. Not only do they add natural sweetness to the bread, they’re also a great source of potassium, vitamin C, and dietary fiber. When selecting bananas for this recipe, be sure to use ripe ones that are slightly soft and speckled with brown spots. The more ripe the bananas, the sweeter and more flavorful your bread will be.
  • Flour: All-purpose flour is the best choice for this recipe, as it provides the right texture and structure for the bread. If you’re looking for a healthier option, you can use whole wheat flour instead. However, keep in mind that it may make the bread denser and more chewy.
  • Cocoa powder: This unsweetened powder is made by grinding roasted cocoa beans, and it contains antioxidants that are good for your heart and brain. For best results, use high-quality cocoa powder that hasn’t been treated with alkali (also known as “Dutch process” cocoa), as this can affect the flavor and texture of the bread.
  • Baking powder & baking soda: both leavening agents that help the bread rise and become fluffy. Baking powder contains both baking soda and an acid, which react when mixed with liquid to create carbon dioxide bubbles. Baking soda, on the other hand, needs an acid (such as the bananas in this recipe) to react and create bubbles. It’s important not to overdo it on these ingredients, as too much can make the bread taste bitter and leave an unpleasant aftertaste.
  • Brown Sugar: less processed than white sugar and contains more minerals such as calcium, iron, and potassium. The molasses in brown sugar also adds a subtle caramel flavor to the bread. If you prefer, you can use a different type of sweetener such as maple syrup, honey, or agave nectar.
  • Unsweetened applesauce: To keep the bread moist and tender, we’re using unsweetened applesauce instead of eggs or dairy. Applesauce not only adds moisture, but also helps to bind the ingredients together. Plus, it’s a great way to add more fruit to your diet!
  • Coconut oil: it adds a hint of coconut flavor and works well with the other ingredients. It’s also a healthier alternative to butter or margarine, as it’s a plant-based source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that can boost your metabolism and promote weight loss.
  • Vegan chocolate chips: Look for high-quality chips that are made with natural ingredients and don’t contain dairy or other animal products. You can also chop up a vegan chocolate bar into small pieces if you don’t have chips on hand.

Tips & Tricks

Here are some tips and tricks to ensure that your vegan chocolate banana bread turns out perfectly every time:

  • Be sure to mix the wet and dry ingredients separately before combining them. This will help to prevent overmixing and ensure that the bread rises properly.
  • Use a spatula to fold in the chocolate chips gently, taking care not to overmix the batter. This will help to distribute the chocolate evenly throughout the bread.
  • Bake

Can I use different sugar?

Yes! I used brown sugar for this recipe because it adds some moisture and a subtle caraemly flavor. You can use white sugar or coconut sugar if you prefer a refined sugar-free version.

How to store

This recipe will stay fresh fro about 3-5 days. It may get a little mushy in an air tight container, so store it in a container covered with foil.

It will keep longer in the fridge.
