Today I am going to show you how to make some healthy whipped coffee (aka dalgona coffee)with coconut sugar and non-dairy milk. Trust me, you’re going to be as addicted as me in no time!
So unlike so many other people, I DON’T drink coffee every day. I actually can’t even have too much caffeine because it gives me headaches. However, my fiance is a HUGE coffee drinker and got me into having it a bit more often. SOOOO here I am… *awkward chuckle*.
When this dalgona coffee trend started popping up on Tik Tok and Instagram, I immediately wanted to try it, but this time, I wanted to make it a healthy whipped coffee for all my people out here.
As I write this, we are currently still in quarantine, so I am sure this trend took off because everyone is missing their Starbucks drinks hardcore.
However, I believe that there’s just something about coffee that brings people together. Although we can’t do it right now, it’s the perfect thing to have in your hand as you sit with your gal pals just catching up. Cold out? Coffee. Meetings or workplace? Coffee shop. Coffee will literally cure-all and let’s not forget how aesthetic it is!! AM I RIGHT ?? 👇🏻👇🏻
What is Dalagona Coffee?
So basically this healthy whipped coffee is a latte drink that involves milk (typically iced) with a creamy whipped coffee on top. It recently became popular on Tik Tok, which I have begrudgingly started getting addicted to. I tried to resist watching them! A month in quarantine will change that though.
The traditional dalgona recipe calls for for equal parts sugar, instant coffee and boiling water — usually 1 tablespoon of each, but I’ve also seen a lot of people doing 2 tablespoons of each to get more volume. In my personal opinion, 2 tbsp of each ingredient gives way more volume for my mixer!
To make this you can use a frother or a handheld mixer. This is the frother I’ve been using and this is a simple mixer you can use. When using my mixer, I made sure to use the whisk beater as opposed to the normal ones! It helped it come much fluffier !!!
How to Make Dalgona Coffee Healthier?
Okay, so the traditional dalgona coffee is hella sweet and has about 13 grams of sugar for every tbsp of sugar that you use! Talk about a sugar rush! This is totally fine if you wanted to treat yourself, but I wanted to see if there was a healthier alternative to this while keeping the coffee whipped. Also, don’t forget to snap a picture for the gram 😉
I decided to go with 2 tbsp of coconut sugar for version and it whips up beautifully !!
What Sweetener Can I Use?
So the best one I made was with the coconut sugar. Obviously, if you want it to taste even better you can use regular sugar.
I made another one with stevia and it didn’t come as fluffy and tasted a little bitter. I used Stevia in the Raw for all of my keto baking endeavors. You can find it on Amazon here.
Do You Have to Use Instant Coffee?
YES, YES AND YES! Instant coffee or instant espresso is the only thing that works. Regular ground coffee won’t dissolve the way instant does. I made this a few times and so far the instant espresso which whipped the best was Cafe Bustelo instant espresso.
What Type of Milk to Use
You can use any type of milk with this recipe since you’re basically adding whipped coffee on top of milk. If you want to keep this healthy whipped coffee dairy-free and vega, here are a few options:
- unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- unsweetened almond milk
- cashew milk
- oat milk
- coconut milk
All of these would be amazing, but I typically always go for unsweetened almond milk. If you’re looking for a creamy texture, I’d choose oat milk or coconut milk.
The foamy mixture on top is rather strong so you will want to mix it in with the milk before drinking! Once you do, sit back and enjoy your coffee drink!
