Chocolate Almond Flour Mug Cake Ingredients
One of the best things about a mug cake is how simple and efficient it is to make. Grab a big mug or a small bowl and start adding in your ingredients.
- Almond flour: almond flour is essential to this recipe, making it gluten-free and low carb. I used blanched almond flour and NOT almond meal.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: I love using dark dutch process cocoa powder for the richest chocolate desserts. Make sure it is unsweetened.
- Maple syrup: a refined sugar option that keeps this mug cake a bit healthier.
- Coconut Oil: a neutral oil is recommended for this recipe. You can also use melted butter if you are okay with dairy.
- Egg: this helps the mug cake rise
- Vanilla Extract: a little bit goes a long way and takes any dessert to the next level
- Dark Chocolate Chips: A must to make this even fudgier

Use the Right Tools for the Job
- My favorite Almond flour. This one comes in a big size and will last a while.
- Ramekins. The best small ramekins for all of the mug cakes!
- Small spatula. A mini spatula is great for adding your batter into your ramekin.
Recipe FAQs
- Can you meal prep this? No you cannot. This cake is made to be eaten warm right out of the microwave. The texture will become very dense
- What is the difference between almond flour and almond meal? Almond flour is made from blanched almonds and has a finer texture and lighter color compared to almond meal. It is also commonly used in baking recipes where finer texture is desired, like cakes, cookies, and muffins. Almond meal is made from almonds that are ground with their skins intact, creating a coarser texture and darker color. It has a grainier texture compared to almond flour and may contain some small almond skin particles.
- Are mug cakes good? Yes! They can be amazing, but if you don't make them right, they can be gummy and unappetizing.
