Smoothies are always my go to breakfast or lunch option especially in the summer months. The berries are fresh and the drinks are refreshing during those hot days.
Over this past summer I went on a smoothie and fruit kick that soon spread across my household. I soon found myself waking myself up with a smoothie or one of my own bowls. Before this summer I had never ventured out of my comfort zone in terms of smoothies. I had always had something simple that jumbled all different fruits together: berries, banana, yogurt, water etc.
However, little did I know that there was something even better out there:
The Acai Bowl.
Since going down to the Jersey shore and seeking out health alternatives, I realized that I was seriously missing out on all the ways you can have a smoothie.
Being the foodie that I am, I was fascinated by these new acai bowls that everyone seemed to be having. Everywhere I looked someone had a new and deliciously topped bowl!
Now, I know acai bowls are not identical to a smoothie, but if you’re a fan of the smoothie you will most definitely be a fan of the acai bowl! One of my favorite parts about these bowls is the TOPPINGS!! The sky is the limit with these babies and my stomach and taste buds have never thanked me more! Some popular topping options are coconut, honey, strawberries, blueberries, banana and granola! It’s truly amazing!
Because I had previously made a Berry Cherry Smoothie, I figured why not make an acai bowl out of it! (Especially since these bowls can go for $8-$10 !…. pretty expensive if you ask me!)
To get started I would suggest making sure you have frozen fruit on hand and a good blender. I personally use the NutriBullet for all of my smoothie making endeavors. However, I would advise against using ice in this mixer. It is not strong enough to crush ice and may damage the blade.
Also I would suggest using frozen strawberries and cherries to give your drink that thick and cold feel to it! Another good tip is to start freezing your bananas . It actually makes all the difference!
As for the liquid element, I usually opt for unsweetened almond milk but this can be substituted with sweetened almond milk or cashew/ coconut milk.
Once you combine these ingredients together blend it all together, pour into a dish, and get ready for the fun part: TOPPINGS!
I LOVE putting toppings on my acai bowls. For me it truly makes the smoothie. MY first go to is ALWAYS sliced bananas. Without this the bowl seems somewhat empty to me. Next, I make sure to add Coconut flakes (my favorite is Bob’s Red Mill Shredded Coconut… THEY’RE DELICIOUS).
After that is all laid out I break out the granola… and I go hard. I can probably plow through a bag of granola all on my lonesome , so you can bet I will be putting that on my bowl. I’ve recently been testing out new granola types and so far I absolutely LOVE KIND Grains Granola, especially the KIND Dark Chocolate Whole Grain Clusters and the Cinnamon Oat clusters!
I also make sure to sprinkle some Chia Seeds on the side partly for the aesthetic and for obvious health benefits. Chia seeds, although small, are rich in nutrients and fiber and are an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids help raise HDL cholesterol or the “good” cholesterol that protect against heart attack and stroke.
Lastly, for one of the best parts I sprinkle Almond Butter across the top to give it that little extra flavor. Almond butter is a little lighter on my stomach but I am also a BIG fan of peanut butter. Either or will suffice when making your very own acai bowl !
It’s time to switch up the smoothie making to acai bowls instead! Let’s get started!
